Join Lubna Saif Abbas in this journey of learning traditional off loom weaving techniques from around the world’s rich cultures and bead embroidery and realizing them in a contemporary manner.
It will begin with an introduction and presentation of the history of seed beads and bead embroidery.
You will learn how to make components, pendants and finally a beaded collar or bracelet that will be customized. Additionally, all the materials, tools and notions required for your work will be provided.
This is a morning session every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for the duration of 4 weeks.
Week 1
- Introduction and overview
- Samples and reference to the historical and contemporary movements in beaded adornment
- Learning the technique of creating ropes with spiral stitch.
- Introduction to peyote (gourd stitch) to make a bracelet with Miyuki bugle beads
Week 2
- Adding findings, embellishing and finishing the closure for the Peyote Stitch Cuff
- Maker Spotlight
- Introduction to N’debele (Herringbone) stitch
- Learning flat and tubular N’debele stitch
Week 3
- Introduction to RAW (Right Angle Weave)
- Mashrabiya Earrings in RAW
- Maker Spotlight
Week 4
- Bead Embroidery basics
- Designing and making a cabochon pendant
- Maker Spotlight
- Creating your customized template for your final piece, either a beaded collar, necklace or cuff.
- Selecting and creating the patterns and learning additional bead embroidery techniques.
- Incorporating the rope stitches for embellishing and design.
- Beginning your final beaded adornment.
- Fine tuning the design and continuing the bead work
- Adding the backing and expert closure of your final piece.
